1. Word Order & Brevity
Mando'a follows Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) word order like English, with no grammatical cases:
Ni nari kajir. → "I move the table." (Ni = I, nari = move, kajir = table)
Brevity: Articles (te, haar, eyn) and the copula verb cuyir ("to be") are frequently dropped when context is clear. For example, Bic cuyi jate ("It is good") is shortened to Bic jate or simply Jate.
2. Verbs & Active Stems
Mando'a has no passive voice. Infinitive verbs end in -ir, -ar, -ur, -or, or -er. To conjugate an active verb in a sentence, simply remove the final -r:
vorer (to accept) → Ni vore (I accept)
susulir (to hear) → Ni susuli gar (I hear you)
jurir (to carry) → Ni juri kad or Ni jur'kad (I carry a saber)
3. Tense Prefixes (Present, Past, Future)
All words in Mando'a are inherently present tense. Past and future tenses are formed with prefixes:
- Past Tense (
ru- / ru'-): e.g. ru'yaim (former home), Ashnar ru'kyrari kaysh (Someone killed him).
- Future Tense (
ven- / ven'-): e.g. ven'riduur (future spouse), ven'akaan (will fight).
4. Adjectives, Adverbs, Gerunds & Participles
Adjectives and adverbs share the same form and are created by adding -la (typically after vowels) or -yc (typically after consonants) to nouns or verb stems:
dinii (lunatic) → dini'la (insane)
jag (man) → jagyc / jagla (masculine)
dala (woman) → dalyc (feminine)
Continuous Verbs & Participles (-ing): Formed by taking the active verb stem and adding -'la or -'yc:
Kaysh hukaati'la vode. → "He is covering his brothers."
Kaysh ru'bajuri'la Mando'a. → "He taught Mando'a." (Past Participle)
5. Pluralization Rules
Nouns are pluralized based on their final letter:
- Ends in a Consonant → add
-e: vod → vode (brothers/sisters), verd → verde (warriors), alor → alore (leaders).
- Ends in a Vowel → add
-se: jetii → jetiise (Jedi/Republic), gadi → gadise (wrists).
- Notable Exceptions:
gett → gett'se (nuts), ad'ika → adike (little ones).
6. Possessives & Comparatives
Possessives: Common nouns use be'- (before consonants), b'- (before vowels), or suffix -b. Proper nouns contract directly with a beten ('):
Be'vod kad (The brother's sword) | B'adat kad (The person's sword) | Boba'kad (Boba's sword)
Comparatives & Superlatives: Add -shy'a for comparative ("more/-er") and -ne for superlative ("most/-est"):
dral (bright) → dralshy'a (brighter) → dralne (brightest)
jate (good) → jate'shya (better) → jatne (best)
7. Interrogative, Imperative & Negative Forms
- Questions (
Tion): Prefix sentences or words with Tion: Tion me'bana? (What's happening?), Tion'ad? (Who?).
- Commands (
Ke / K'): Use Ke before consonants and K' before vowels: Ke'pare! (Wait!), K'olar! (Come here!), K'atini! (Suck it up!).
- Negation (
nu-, ne-, n'-): Attach to words or clauses: ne'tra (black, lit. no sky), nu'kaan (non-combatant). Double negatives add emphasis: Nu draar! (No way in hell!).
